I think we, as human beings, are utterly over-bombarded with stuff. Enough to overload our senses for a couple of lifetimes (for those of you that believe in reincarnation, that is).

I mean, everywhere I turn I see choices choices and more choices on clothes, colors, shops, ads, stuff, stuff and other stuff that I can wear, see, or do. Doesn't it make you dizzy reading that? Because it makes me dizzy writing it. Things just whiz by our faces all day long at such a fast pace that we grow desensitized by it. And in order for the media to grab our attention, they must make things "bigger" and flashier. Get fancy with the technology and spend the bigger bucks to "wow" us. And we, in turn, grow more...unfeeling.

What happened to simple? We can all take a lesson on the Paranormal Activity phenomena going around (which rocked!) and go back to basics. Let our senses work for us instead of working to get at our senses...Because true art/beauty lies in the simplicity, the understated.

(...and so you were thinking, "when are you going to mention some hidden insight on fashion?" I thought I just did...)

I think this is a fab concept for myspace, which unfortunately, I feel has not been given the "cool beans" reception that it deserves because it's overshadowed by the facebook outbreak. I mean, hello? It's like shopping and trying on clothes without even shopping and trying on clothes. And if you're like me (which is lazy), this is the shiitakes.

Now this is a concept I can dig: Clothes made out of milk.

Though I don't know how this will go with those who are lactose intolerant but it gives milk another purpose in life and helps the environment. (Oh, I love my things with mulitiple functionalities!)

Fashion clothing lines such as Linda Loudermilk and FIN among many others have embraced this and other eco-friendly fabrics. Double brownie points to them - and they can have a glass of milk with that too.

TOMS Shoes...for a cause, because You'll feel Good

This is the shiitakes. Shoes, with a cool concept: For every pair of shoes that is purchased, one pair is given to a child who needs them somewhere in the world. I like it! A non-profit org posing as a fashion e-retailer. It doesn't get as soul-tastic as this!

As I mentioned before, fashion and style comes down to your body and the energy you put behind clothes. So shoes with a double purpose will make anyone look extra fabulous because they'll be feeling good about making a difference in the world.

Most of TOMS shoes are canvas-style and flat which are totally my style. And with fall quickly approaching this lovely City of New York of mine, my mind is wandering towards boots. This one is very Marvel comics superhero-like, no? What female doesn't want to be wonder woman?

Now that's what I call wearing your heart out on your FEET.

It all comes down to being Naked and building up from that.

Fashion and style is (and this is my personal belief, I didn't get this from anywhere) 70% body/image perception and 30% clothes. Style has mostly nothing to do with your clothes and everything to do with YOU. You can put two people in identical outfits and accessories but they'll never look the same.

It starts with your head; such as comfort level, emotional state, confidence, etc. Which then translates into your muscles, body movement and how you carry yourself.

The energies coming from your mind and body ultimately becomes the driving force behind the clothes that you wear and gives your style...your fashion its own unique individual fingerprint.

You know what they say, we are what we see (or maybe I made that one up).

So I was perusing through some photos of mine in all of my prior glories, particularly the ones of my birthday a few years back and I must say, I wasn't lookin' too shabby back then. I had to laugh at myself for that thought because I distinctly remember looking at those photos before and cringing at myself. I don't know what just happened there. That picture of me probably morphed gradually through the years without my knowledge...ha! But no, that would be a very Harry Potter explanation and I don't do those, or at least I try not to.

I was just not appreciating my body right then and now. I was only able to love my PRIOR image much much LATER on. So in a twisted sense, (and like I said before, people like it twisted) we end up chasing ghost images of ourselves. Spooky, huh?

Case of the Twirly Whirlies...

My hair has been really acting up. Between the humitdity and freak t-storms, it's all just messin' with my waves. At times like these, I wish I had the option of pre-ordering my parts before I was born. That would've made life a lot easier...Ha. You know what I mean-- like glamorous straight hair and...yeah, well the straight hair pretty much does it for me. I know these days you can get the whole Japanese straight perm bit but hey-- I'm lazy. It may seem like it's no fuss but believe me, it's a lot more trouble than it's worth and I don't believe in doing more than I have to, especially when it comes to hair.

Over the years, I've learned to accept my curls and just go with it. It's easier to work with what you've got than to go against it. Like when it rains or it's humid, I ride with my waves (so to speak). With just the right hair products, humidity calls for some fantastic curls! Why fight it? I see way too many women (men with curly hair just keep it short or bald) fight with the straight iron or blowdryer, fight with the weather, or fight within themselves with what they're given. I don't know about you, but that's a lot of battles. I think PEACE is the easier road.

Stiletto Theory

This up & down weather is driving me wild. Let spring be. I was totally enjoying the warmth and sun this past Saturday and was able to walk about without a thick jacket on that night. It was great! I feel so light and free when I'm not wearing a ton of layers on. When you’re a female, that’s a good thing. I guess that’s the reason why we women tend to go overboard with the "non-layering"...sometimes to the point of practical nakedness.

So after a night out drinking a Cambodian Mojito (go figure) at 169 Bar, eating paella at Cuba Cafe and drinking water at Taj, I became my alter ego, "Miss Philosophical So-and-So." And as I was walking (okay, more like limping from the heeled shoes that I never wear) with one of my girlfriends back to our cars, I decided to tell her about my stiletto theory. So here's how it goes:

It’s no accident that women are the ones that wear heeled shoes and NOT men. You see, a long long time ago, during the time of the caveman days when they would go running after us with a club...ONE smart caveman realized that if he puts a cavechick in heels and tells her that she looks beautiful in it (Genius I tell you!), she can’t run as fast and ergo, easier to club & drag back to the cave.

Now fast forward through evolution and there I was - limping to my car.

Summin' Outta Nothin'

Anyway, me being a stainer (see last post) doesn't help the fact that I've abstained from buying clothes for a year. Yes, ONE WHOLE YEAR. It started this past June. I needed some funds to buy things for my new apartment and so I've replaced buying clothes with furniture. I must say, it's actually not that bad. I even got very good at improvising with what I have and learned the art of "faking" a style. (Important keywords here: Safety Pins) It's almost as if my creative juices started cranking up full time once I set my brains to clothing deprivation...almost similar to an adrenaline rush. I guess, where you have the lack of one, you have more of another.

I soon began to realize that I don't need a lot of clothes to make some good outfits. You know what they say, we only wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time and gosh darnit!...I was attempting to stretch that 20 to a 90. Hocus Pocus! Make my wardrobe elastic!

Okay, so I'm a self-professed stainer. I can't help it! Just give me a pair of whites and I'll make a rainbow out of it. GAH! Maybe it's me, maybe it's my chi or maybe I'm just a self-professed klutz. Choose what you like.

I've also gotten into the bad habit of knocking whole cups of coffee onto my keyboard. Because of that, I got myself an indestructible keyboard. It's even machine washable! Can you believe that? As for my clothes, I can't say much. If it's white, bleach is my God. If it's not, then it becomes a brand new hand rag. Either way, it works out to something functional in my life.

One thing I have learned from my many (many) years of staining and my one ADVICE to you: Run. Run as fast as you can to the nearest water source the very second you've got it on you. Douse some water on Mr. Stain before it gets too comfortable in your clothes. Because really, one night stains are not good for any of us. Ha.

Me and My Magic Glasses

I don't know what it is about my glasses. I'm only wearing them because my eyes have been a bit buggy lately. Prior to that, I would never fathom wearing them in any type of nightly social environment. Howerver, it's gotten to that point where it doesn't bother me which way or other. So as of late, I've been wearing them out and I must say, I think I've gotten much more ATTENTION from the opposite sex with my glasses on than without. It's like moths to a flame. What is up with that?

I guess it's that twisted appeal that glasses have. People like it twisted.
